Sherpur, February 12, 2025: A tragic accident claimed the lives of two farmers in Sherpur’s Chhattarkandi village when they were electrocuted while operating an electric irrigation pump.
The deceased have been identified as Akram Hossain, son of the late Abdul Latif, and Abdul Hanif, son of the late Somej Ali, both residents of Chhattarkandi village.
The incident occurred around 8:00 AM on Wednesday in Bajitkhila Union of Sherpur Sadar Upazila.
According to local sources, 42-year-old farmer Akram Hossain was attempting to operate an irrigation pump when he was electrocuted due to a faulty electrical connection.
Seeing him collapse, 45-year-old agricultural worker Abdul Hanif rushed to his aid but was also electrocuted in the process. Both men died instantly at the scene.
Sherpur Sadar Police Station’s Sub-Inspector (SI) Ashraf Hossain confirmed the incident, stating that legal procedures were underway.
Bajitkhila Union Parishad Chairman Md. Abdullah Al Hasan expressed his condolences, noting that the tragedy had cast a deep sense of grief over the village.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Akram Hossain was attempting to connect the irrigation pump to an electric source from a neighboring house without turning off the power supply. This led to his electrocution, and Abdul Hanif suffered the same fate while trying to save him.
The incident underscores the dangers of handling electrical equipment without proper safety precautions in agricultural settings.
Authorities are expected to investigate further to determine whether safety violations or faulty wiring contributed to the accident.
